How to get rid of frown lines
Frown lines tend to form as horizontal lines between your eyebrows and develop naturally with the aging process. As you age, your skin loses elasticity and does not easily return to its original shape. Sadly, frown lines can sometimes make you look annoyed or irritated even when you’re not. As well as developing naturally with age, there are other factors that contribute to having frown lines:
- Your DNA has a part to play, due to the fact we can inherit the quality of our skin. Some people have resilient skin and can delay lines, but others have the type of skin that is more prone to lines and wrinkles.
- Smoking causes skin to show signs of ageing faster, due to a narrowing of the blood vessels, which then deliver less oxygenated blood to the tissues. This can result in less elasticity. Plus, the repeated physical motion of smoking a cigarette can cause frown lines around the mouth.
- Stress can be a big factor. Modern life can often cause overwhelming pressures for us all, from constantly being connected to trying to do too much. Not to mention the affect that increased air and noise pollution has on our well-being. Stress releases the hormone, cortisol, which can break down the skin’s collagen and elastin. This happens naturally with ageing but if you suffer with high stress, it will speed the process of skin aging.
- Sun exposure. We tend to squint more when in the sun, this can lead to permanent lines that do not go away, especially in those who are a lot more exposed to the sun. The UV rays in sunlight break down the elastin and collagen in your skin, making it easier for lines to form.
Frown lines can often negatively affect self-esteem, and despite using a high factor sun cream, eliminating stress triggers, and cutting out smoking, many people still want to get rid of existing lines or avoid these stubborn lines from appearing in the first instance. Anti-wrinkle treatment can provide this option for you. Here are the treatments often undertaken by our patients:
Botox
Botox is the most popular injectable treatment for those frown lines between your eyebrows. The substance blocks and paralyzes the nerve signal that causes the muscles to contract, meaning it will make those lines less noticeable.
You will notice the full effects of Botox after just 2 weeks. The result will not be permanent and will require you to come back after 3-6 months for further treatment.
Dermal Fillers
Botox is more often than not used for frown lines, but if you have deep permanent lines then dermal fillers maybe suitable for you. They work by plumping the skin to regain fullness and a youthful look. Like Botox, the full effect will be after just two weeks, and you will require a top up after 6-12 months.
Do not hesitate to contact the Gentle Facial Aesthetics team if you would like to discuss either of these treatments further. We would love to help.
