How to prevent wrinkles?

Wrinkles in the skin typically appear as a result of ageing and is various processes and there are many factors that contribute to the appearance of wrinkles including sun damage, dehydration, smoking, habitual facial expressions and loss of body mass.

However, a few factors that cause wrinkles are simply out of our control (not all of us are Dorian Gray). There are always ways to prevent certain wrinkles from forming:

  • Protecting skin from the UV rays, this can be limiting the time spent in the sun, especially when the sun is at its hottest (this is why everyone in Spain has a siesta from 1pm-3pm). Always use sunscreen, as even if it may look overcast, the UV rate can be sneakily high. A lot of skincare products now have built in SPF, which is an easy way of remembering to put it on! But it is still recommended to wear at least SPF30.
  • Hydration: a skin that is well hydrated will naturally appear more plum. Drink lots of water and use a moisturiser, preferably with added hyaluronic acid as it attracts and retains moisture.
  • Don’t smoke, this one is for many health reasons, but the skin suffers too as it can accelerate the natural ageing process, this may be due to nicotine’s effect on collagen! Colour and texture will deteriorate faster, and you’ll also have the tell-tale smokers’ lines!
  • A healthy diet: more study is needed to fully understand the correlation between nutrition and wrinkles, but it is always best to eat as healthy as possible. Bad fat and sugary foods have an impact on our bodies and also our skin.

So, pump up the vitamin C, as it can help regenerate skin cells and reduce certain wrinkles. Replace sugary foods with just as yummy fruits such as watermelon, cantaloupe and red grapes etc as they also contain antioxidants. Also consider consuming more collagen: meat fish and eggs, however there are vegan options: papaya, kale and pumpkin seeds to name a few. Or take collagen capsules (these also exist in vegan form.)

And of course, Botox. Botox can be used as a preventative for wrinkles. It relaxes the facial muscles and habituates the skin to crease less harshly, thus minimising the creation of wrinkles!  Botox is not just for women either, we have a growing number of men investing in Botox to help increase their confidence and appearance.  Most of our Botox patients are regular attenders, however we are always happy to see new patients.  Feel free to give us a call or email us at [email protected] for further information or to book an appointment.
